Kitchen Under-Cabinet Lighting: A Practical Guide

Why Your Kitchen Needs Under-Cabinet Lighting

Kitchen under-cabinet lighting is one of the simplest upgrades with the biggest payoff. Your ceiling light does a decent job of lighting the room, but stand at the counter and you’ll notice something — your own shadow falls right where you’re chopping. That’s because overhead light hits the top of the cabinets, not the worktop beneath them.

Under-cabinet lighting fixes this in one move. It puts light directly on the counter surface — where the knife meets the onion. The difference is immediate. Colours look accurate, food prep gets easier, and the whole kitchen feels more finished.

Three Ways to Light Under Your Cabinets

1. LED Strip Lights — Continuous, Even Glow

LED strips run the full length of your cabinets without gaps. The result is a smooth wash of light across the entire worktop — no dark patches between fixtures.

For cabinet use, we recommend a COB (Chip-on-Board) LED strip. Unlike older SMD strips where you can see individual dots of light, COB strips produce a solid, unbroken line. They run on 24V (safe near water), draw very little power, and last 30,000+ hours.

For narrower cabinets or tight spaces, the 5mm-wide LED strip (120 LED/M) at KSh 320/m fits where standard 10mm strips won’t.

Dot-free, continuous light. Perfect for under-cabinet runs — enough to light a standard L-shaped kitchen for under KSh 3,000.

  • 24V low voltage — safe near water
  • 30,000+ hour lifespan
  • Cuttable every 5cm to fit any length

2. Aluminium LED Profiles — The Professional Finish

An LED strip on its own works, but pair it with an aluminium profile and the result goes from DIY job to fitted kitchen. The profile serves three purposes: it acts as a heatsink (extending strip life), the frosted diffuser eliminates LED dot visibility, and the channel hides all wiring.

Our FLUX Cabinet profiles are designed specifically for 18mm MDF and blockboard — the standard thickness used by kitchen fitters across Kenya. They click directly onto the board edge. No routing, no grooving, no special tools.

Click-on installation — no grooving required. Provides both upward and downward light, washing the splashback above while illuminating the counter below.

  • CABINET-13 — takes 5-12mm strips. KSh 1,400
  • CABINET-5 — for 5mm narrow strips. KSh 1,800
  • 3M lengths, cuttable with a hacksaw

3. Rechargeable Magnetic Lights — Zero Wiring

Renting? Don’t want to deal with wiring? These stick on with a strong magnet — no screws, no drilling, no electrician. Pull them off to recharge via USB-C, stick them back.

Built-in motion sensor turns them on when you open the cabinet or walk up to the counter. Tuneable between warm white (2700K), neutral (4000K), and cool white (6000K).

  • Tuneable white (warm / neutral / cool)
  • USB-C rechargeable — no wiring at all

Automate Your Cabinet Lights With Sensors

Going the wired route? You don’t have to fumble for a switch every time. Our cabinet power supplies come with sensor inputs — open the door, lights come on. Close it, they fade off.

The setup is three parts:

  1. 24V Cabinet PSU with sensor input (KSh 1,500) — powers your strips and connects to a sensor.
  2. Cabinet Sensor (KSh 600) — detects motion, hand-wave, or door opening.
  3. Wiring harness (KSh 200) — connects PSU to strip cleanly.
Pro tip: The sensor kit adds about KSh 2,300 to your installation — a one-time cost for years of hands-free convenience. Particularly useful for walk-in closets and wardrobes.

Choosing Your Colour Temperature

This detail makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

  • Warm white (2700K–3000K) — Golden tone. Suits wooden cabinetry and traditional kitchens.
  • Neutral white (4000K) — Our recommendation for most kitchens. Balanced daylight feel — colours look accurate, which matters when you’re checking if that avocado is actually ripe.
  • Cool white (5000K–6000K) — Bright, clinical. Good for commercial prep areas. Can feel harsh at home.
Can’t decide? The rechargeable magnetic lights let you switch between all three — a good way to test your preference before committing to a wired installation.

Installation Tips That Actually Matter

Mount towards the front edge of the cabinet, not against the wall. Back-mounting lights the splashback nicely but leaves the worktop — where you actually work — in shadow.

Use 24V strips, not 12V. For kitchen runs longer than 2 metres, 24V maintains consistent brightness across the full length. 12V dims noticeably at the far end.

Hide everything. The magic is seeing the light but not the source. Aluminium profiles conceal the strip completely. Run cables through cabinet interiors or use adhesive clips along the back edge.

Test before you commit. Temporarily tape the strip in position and power it up. You’ll immediately see if the placement creates shadows or if the colour temperature clashes with your tiles.

What a Typical Kitchen Costs

For a standard 4-metre L-shaped kitchen:

Component Qty Unit Price Total
COB LED Strip (24V) 4m KSh 290/m KSh 1,160
FLUX CABINET-13 Profile 2 x 3M KSh 1,400 KSh 2,800
24V PSU with sensor input 1 KSh 1,500 KSh 1,500
Cabinet sensor 1 KSh 600 KSh 600
Wiring harness 1 KSh 200 KSh 200
Total KSh 6,260

That’s a full professional-grade, sensor-automated under-cabinet lighting system for about the price of a decent dinner out.

Prefer to skip wiring entirely? Two rechargeable magnetic strip lights at KSh 2,600 each (KSh 5,200 total) give you motion-activated lighting with zero installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best under-cabinet lighting for kitchens?

COB LED strips paired with aluminium profiles give the most professional result. The COB strip produces dot-free, continuous light, while the profile acts as a heatsink and hides all wiring. For a no-installation option, rechargeable magnetic LED cabinet lights with motion sensors are ideal.

How much does under-cabinet lighting cost in Kenya?

A full sensor-automated system for a standard 4-metre L-shaped kitchen costs approximately KSh 6,260. This includes COB LED strip (KSh 1,160), two FLUX cabinet profiles (KSh 2,800), 24V power supply with sensor (KSh 1,500), cabinet sensor (KSh 600), and wiring (KSh 200). Two rechargeable magnetic lights cost KSh 5,200 with zero installation.

Can I install under-cabinet lights without an electrician?

Yes. Rechargeable magnetic LED cabinet lights need zero wiring — they attach magnetically and recharge via USB-C. For wired LED strip setups, FLUX cabinet profiles click onto standard 18mm MDF board edges without routing or grooving, making DIY installation straightforward.

What colour temperature is best for kitchen under-cabinet lighting?

Neutral white (4000K) is the most versatile choice for kitchens. It provides a balanced daylight feel where food colours look accurate. Warm white (2700K-3000K) suits wooden cabinetry and traditional kitchens. Cool white (5000K-6000K) works for commercial prep areas but can feel harsh at home.

Do under-cabinet lights turn on automatically?

Yes, with the right setup. Our 24V cabinet power supply (KSh 1,500) connects to a cabinet sensor (KSh 600) that detects motion, hand-waves, or door opening. The rechargeable magnetic lights also have built-in motion sensors — no separate sensor needed.
